Turkish band Seyyah will make their way to Copenhagen to perform at Sydhavns Festival and do a workshop on Turkish makam music with the west Turkish Zeybek tradition as a starting point. The workshop provides an introduction to the general makam system, incorporating different rhythms as well as a general understanding of Turkish tonality for both melody instruments and singers.
It will be an open forum where those who register create the depth of the workshop. You do not need to play the instruments that the teachers have.
The workshop takes place at Christianshavns Beboerhus from 10:00-13:00 and to take part you need to register below as there is a limited number at participants
About Seyyah
A group of musicians merging music and traveling with a global repertoire. Zurna, klarinet, kaval, sipsi and Oğur sazı meet strings and percussions to sound out the rich cultural tones of Anatolia, the Balkans and beyond. Based in Istanbul, musicians from different countries cultivate the repertoire and inspirations of their musical journey.
Founded in Strasbourg, France in2017 by singer Ceren Kaçar, multi-instrumentalist Ozan Demir and violinist Gabriel Meidinger, Seyyah has lived through numerous musicians and countries already. Seyyah's music is a reflection of these journeys and encounters through the prism of traditional music from Asia Minor, the Balkansand beyond.
In the beginning of 2019 the ensemble was reunited in Istanbul where it is based today and has settled into the local music scene. In September 2019, they joined Danish music band 'AySay' for a collaborative tour in Denmark as well as held workshops on Turkish traditional folk music in Royal Academy of Music Aarhus (Det Jyske Musikkonservatorium).
In March 2021 Seyyah recorded their first album which has been released and can be streamed here: https://open.spotify.com/album/3faIhvTxTt77Fitlka7y3E?si=c4sFnd3rQGK5HXeE8-X8Iw
