Digital tools for music production are often perceived as the land of opportunity. Technology is shrouded in a narrative of democratization, progress, and artistic freedom.

But there are several sides to that story. This is shown by the Iraqi-British musician, composer and researcher Khyam Allami with his sharply conceived project ’Apotome’, which recently won a special award at Ars Electronica 2021 – a prestigious award for new media art.

Khyam Allami sheds light on the embedded prejudices in technology: invisible distortions that can be explained as remnants of the colonial past and a narrow Western view of art.

In a conversation and open debate with journalist and PhD in musicology Anders Reuter, Khyam Allami will talk about 'Apotome' and unfold the project's perspectives in dialogue with the audience.

The talk at Volume CPH is presented in collaboration with the Rhythmic Music Conservatory (RMC) and is part of Khyam Allami's visit to Gong Tomorrow, where 'Apotome' will be discussed, tested and performed in various contexts.

The artist talk is free and open to all. No registration required.
