New Masters: Music Creation
Music Creation is a new two-year Masters programme at Rhythmic Music Conservatory (RMC). It is created to provide bachelor trained songwriters, sound technicians and musicians with an opportunity to immerse themselves in the further development of their creative artistic profiles with the purpose of a career in composition, songwriting or music production.
The initial 6-8 students will be starting at Music Creation in August 2016 to create new songs, new compositions and new sounds with a personal and individual artistic expression. The student’s creative profile is supported by the highest professionel competence, both in terms of the expected environment around the programme and through the teachers assigned.
"Music Creation shall contribute in raising the quality of Danish music both artistically and commercially and thus constitute a valuable addition to the many talented self-taught auteurs in pop music in particular. Contemporary rhythmic music is in constant need of new songwriters, composers and producers that can create music with personality, originality and high quality,” says principal Henrik Sveidahl.
”Songwriting, composing and music production are areas in strong development both domestically and abroad, and the programme is aiming at the global labor market so the Danish auteurs will match the international level. There is potential to export more music than today and Music Creation will strengthen the outlook as well as the local scene, the Danish language and expression,” Henrik Sveidahl adds.
change of conditions on the music scene
With Music Creation as a new masters programme for auteurs in contemporary rhythmic music RMC now provides a full set of programmes at graduate level within the three primary areas of employment in music that can be described as: making music, performing music and teaching music. RMC thus already offers masters degrees for performers (Music Performance) and teachers (Music Education).
“Creating your own music has traditionally been seen as an integrated part of a rhythmic musician’s work and that is a major reason why RMC has not previously offered a separate masters programme for auteurs. Our programmes has instead been based on a practice where the students work on their own compositions in courses and projects . We are changing that now with Music Creation because the music scene has gone through some significant changes in the past decades,” Henrik Sveidal says and continues:
“Previously music was typically created through collective processes in practice rooms and recording studios. Today music is often created by individuals or in smaller production teams specializing in writing and producing for others. The technological development has enabled global distribution of music in professional quality without access to expensive studio facilities, and though the music industry has experienced a decline in revenues from the sales of recorded music, it is generally compensated by increased revenues from songwriting and production rights."
"This development with significantly changed conditions and work processes has strongly increased the competition between auteurs in music, and it increases the demands for the artist’s qualifications in composition, songwriting and production as a precondition for the success and reach of the music. Also, as a consequence of the development, the record companies is not investing in talent development of auteurs to the same extent as previously, which has created a greater need for other environments that can develop the creative talents," says Henrik Sveidahl.
