Who we are
Rhythmic Music Conservatory (RMC) is a pioneer among educational, knowledge and cultural institutions in both the field of rhythmic music and contemporary art, attracting the best students and staff, and educating graduates to the highest standard. RMC develops knowledge and creates music and musical experiences that enrich and enthuse.
The artistic form at RMC is deeply rooted in academic and cultural traditions, and is in continuous dialogue with the contemporary world. It is characterised by an exploratory approach to music creation through composition, production, improvisation and performance in both individual and collective processes. The development of the area often involves an expansion of existing practice through the integration of new technologies and media, and by operating across artistic and societal domains.
At RMC, students and staff develop through mutually inspiring dialogue and innovative exploration. As a living development centre for rhythmic music, RMC is an open, curious and diverse community where the professionalism and practice of the individual is brought into play in a generous and respectful encounter and collaboration with others.
Our vision
We create value for people and society, and contribute to the development of a sustainable world of music.
What we will develop: 3 benchmarks
1. We create new possibilities for music in society
We take on a leading role as a development centre for art in society, and develop new ways to engage our competencies, including for purposes and potentials that lie outside the traditional arenas of music – such as by addressing major societal issues relating to, for example, social inclusion, wellbeing and climate. In this way, we strengthen the role of music as a public matter, and open up new possibilities for RMC graduates to create sustainable working lives through broadly oriented work.
2. We contribute to a more diverse and healthy musical life
We position ourselves at the heart of the conversation about and development of a safer and more inclusive musical life. Through partnerships with formal and informal musical environments, we will open closed doors, create space for new expressions, narratives and practices, and allow more people to be heard. At the same time, we take on the responsibility of educating graduates who know how to create healthy working communities that are characterised by openness and wellbeing.
3. We work actively with the interface between music and technology
Historically, the development of rhythmic music as a contemporary art form is inextricably linked with the development of technology. As a leading educational, knowledge and cultural institution in our field, we use and create new knowledge about technology in a constructive manner to develop music, music pedagogy and solutions in musical life in the broadest sense. We educate graduates who can act on and relate to the possibilities and challenges presented by the technology, and who will work to ensure that it serves the interests of music, music pedagogy and musical life – and not vice versa. We also recognise the democratising and inclusive potential of the technology, as a way to open up our field to people who have not had previously had access to it.
