The article examines how the existence of informal learning processes in the rock/pop recording studio since the 1960s has helped to nurture original initiatives, which makes it necessary to reconsider the relationship between the concepts of amateur and professional. Through informal learning processes, the amateur often finds shortcuts to new musical discoveries which go beyond the traditional view of the professional musician as the person with the greatest competence. But if the rhythmic music programmes at the academies of music wish to attract original and innovative musicians, it will be necessary to start taking amateurs much more seriously.
