Citizens As/Are Artists (CAA)

With contemporary music as an example, Citizens As/Are Artists (CAA) explores new approaches to, and the consequences of, developing citizens’ artistic literacy, creating new knowledge about the practical and discursive circumstances that enable/hinder citizens’ access to arts. CAA explores collaborative artful practices involving citizens and professional artists, investigating how momentary artistic experiences could be transformed into life-long knowledge and skills, and empowering artistic citizens with access to not only participate in arts, but actually contribute to artistic creation. It aims at addressing cultural accessibility challenges and investigates how collaborative artful practices could challenge the elitist dichotomy between the artist/creator and the audience that currently limits art’s potential for the citizen.
