The Ambient Music Conference 2026: Call for papers & performances

Take part in the conversation about ambient music at the big international conference at RMC next year.

Are you an artist, performer, or researcher with a passion for ambient music? This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the first international conference of this decade dedicated to ambient music: The Ambient Music Conference, taking place at the Rhythmic Music Conservatory (RMC) in Copenhagen on 15-17 September, 2026.

Ambient music covers a vast spectrum. It has a clearly soothing and healing quality – but also oozes into all sorts of other genres, styles and artistic movements: its roots and offshoots range from Minimal Music to Krautrock, from Gamelan to Soundscape Composition, from radiophonic composition to noise music, from film music to neoclassic, from hauntology to lofi hip hop beats to relax/study to. With roots and branches spanning the globe, ambient music is a truly planetary genre that continuously evolves through local scenes and hybrid forms.

The Ambient Music Conference invites artists and researchers from a wide range of academic and artistic disciplines to explore ambient music in all its diversity – from live performances and composition to hybrid genres, audio papers, and more traditional academic presentations.

With a strong focus on experimental and artistic formats, all current and former students, as well as researchers within artistic research, are encouraged to take part in the conversation.

The conference is organized in collaboration between RMC, Roskilde University, and The Sound Studies Lab at the University of Copenhagen. Together, the organizers have outlined a series of exploration themes, covering everything from the cultural history of local and planetary ambient scenes to experiments in listening technologies, including immersive sound formats.

However, the unexpected perspectives and artistic contributions that challenge conventional ideas about ambient music are just as interesting. You are very welcome to submit your proposal If you have an idea that falls outside the expected framework.
