New Scandinavianness: Urban Music and Transnational Dynamics in the Early 21st Century

By Henrik Marstal

As part of my research project on RMC titled Hvordan dansk rock blev dansk (How Danish rock got Danish), I worked periodically on an article about national identity among 'new scandinavians' active in hip hop, r'n'b and dancehall in the 00s.

The article deals with how urban music artists like Outlandish (DK), Natasja (DK), Tensta (S) and Karpe Diem (N) in the period 2004-2011, gave a voice to 'newdanish' understanding and views relating to danish identity. These artists managed to communicate, though major hits, a new view on what it meant to be danish, seen from a 'newdanish' perspective.
