Canonic Formations and Non-Canonic Positionings: The Case of Post-Millennium Danish Popular Music

By Henrik Marstal

As part of my research project on RMC titled Hvordan dansk rock blev dansk (How Danish rock got Danish), I worked on an article on the canon as a concept in relation to danish pop and rock around the turn of the milenium. The article was published by the Journal of European Culture in 2015.

In danish rock, canonic formations have always taken place, but the very concept of a canon had a surge in importance in the the early 00'oes. Canonical conceptions have had major consequences for how danish-language musicin the 00'oes was communicated and promoted, but without anybody openly acknowledging that this was the case.
