Music Creation

The Master’s in Music Creation is a two-year programme that provides you with an opportunity to immerse yourself in the further development of your artistic profile in the area of music creation – composition, songwriting or music production. The programme focuses on creating musical works, and you are to a large extent able to shape the programme in accordance with your artistic profile and development. The programme offers plenty of opportunity for you to hone your skills as a creative, performing musician and to develop new ideas through an inquiring practice. You will have access to individual guidance related to your educational goals; you can get involved in collaborative projects across RMC’s own programmes as well as at other artistic schools at Holmen, Copenhagen; and as a part of the programme, you must organize a self-planned external semester. The programme also place emphasis on developing your entrepreneurial skills, and will give you direct access to RMC’s extensive national and international networks.

Application

WHO CAN APPLY?

You must either have passed the Bachelor programme Music Performance, Composition or Music Production at RMC or possess a relevant bachelor’s degree from another Danish or foreign academy of music. The Conservatory may accept other similar entrance qualifications.

Please note that only a limited number of students can be admitted to the master’s programmes at the Conservatory each year, so the applicants will be selected on the basis of abilities and skills.

You must create a profile, fill in the online application form and upload relevant files. 

WHAT SHOULD THE APPLICATION CONTAIN?

You will be requested to answer the following questions:

  • What are your artistic goals/visions? (500-1000 keystrokes)
  • What skills do you think you need to develop in order to achieve your goals? (500-1000 keystrokes)
  • What knowledge do you consider necessary in order to achieve your goals? (500-1000 keystrokes)
  • Please give 2-3 examples of projects (subject/content, project type) that you would consider working on during the programme (500-1000 keystrokes)
  • Personal portfolio - written description: Please give a brief description of your reflections related to the uploaded music. (max. 1000 keystrokes)

You will be asked to upload the following:

  • Personal portfolio – music: Please upload 2-3 examples of musical projects, for which you have been artistically responsible, and which you believe present you well as a creative composer, songwriter or music producer (total duration of the 2-3 examples: 10 minutes). Submission format: MP3
  • Personal portfolio – credit list: Please upload a list of credits with precise specification of your own role and, if applicable, the role of any others in relation to the 2-3 musical projects. Submission format: PDF
  • Documentation of your
    • Bachelor degree, i.e. Degree Certificate including Diploma Supplement. Submission format: PDF
      or
    • Expected Bachelor degree – documentation of your studies and the content of the courses you have passed, and confirming that your Bachelor programme will be completed by 1st of July 2020. Submission format: PDF
      Please upload certified documentation in Danish, Norwegian, Swedish or English.

Other submitted material will not be included in the assessment.

APPLICATION FEE

Applicants for a master programme at RMC must pay an application fee of 500 DKK. The fee covers part of the costs associated with the entrance examination and is non-refundable after the application deadline.

Entrance examination

    WHO IS SELECTED FOR THE entrance EXAMINATION?

    All applicants who meet the admission requirements will be invited to attend an entrance examination.

    If you have completed a relevant Danish or foreign bachelor’s programme in music, which does not provide direct admission, your application will be assessed individually. If approved, you will be further assessed by means of an entrance examination. As a general rule, the more closely related the bachelor’s degree is to the master’s programme applied for, the better the chances of being admitted.

    FORM AND CONTENT OF THE entrance EXAMINATION

    The entrance examination consists of a presentation and an interview.

    • Presentation
      You present your own musical works by playing recorded music or by live performance (solo or group performance). It is not required that you are performing. The works presented can not be identical to the works, included in the submitted portfolio.
      Duration: 10 minutes, including any changeovers.
    • Interview
      An interview with a panel of two assessors on the basis of your presentation, personal portfolio and written application. You will be interviewed on your own. 
      Duration: 10 minutes.

    The three components of the entrance examination (presentation, interview and personal portfolio) will be assessed as a whole by the panel. Emphasis will be placed on your artistic and academic standard, and your study project plan.

    AFTER THE ENtrance EXAMINATION

    ADMISSION

    After the entrance examination, the Conservatory will decide whom to admit. The selection is based on the results achieved at the entrance examination, and the requirements of the music business. Due to the limited number of study places, the conservatory cannot guarantee that all qualified applicants will be admitted.

    WAITING LIST

    A small number of applicants qualified for admission but unsuccessful due to a limited number of places available, may be offered a place on a waiting list. Applicants on the waiting list may be offered admission no later than 1 June.

    ILLNESS IN CONNECTION WITH THE ENTRANCE EXAMINATION

    Illness must be documented by medical certificate if you wish to have the opportunity to take a make-up examination. The medical certificate must be provided no later than three days after the examination date. The Conservatory will determine the date of any make-up examination, and you will be notified of this as soon as possible. It will not be possible to take the make-up examination at any other time than that set by RMC. You are responsible for paying the cost of the medical certificate.

    ENtrance EXAMINATION LANGUAGE

    The entrance examination is normally conducted in Danish. If the applicant does not speak or understand Danish, the examination can be carried out in English.

    Programme structure

    The Master’s programme corresponds to 120 ECTS points, equivalent to two years of full-time study at 1,620 hours per year. A year of full-time study includes all work connected with the studies, including classes, independent study, examinations and all other study-related activities.

    The Master’s programme comprises studies at an advanced level, and has its emphasis on in-depth study, individual options and innovation, with the aim of strengthening your artistic profile.

    To a large extent, the programme content takes the form of independent project work, which allows you to organise the process yourself within a set framework - in dialog with your teacher. The majority of the programme is structured around a certain amount of weekly tuition, class-based as well as individual, and part of the subjects are taken together with students of the Conservatory’s other Master’s programmes.

    There are good opportunities for co-operation with the other programmes of the Conservatory, as well as with other artistic educational institutions in Holmen, Copenhagen.

    The subjects of the programme are Music Creation, Electives, Entrepreneurship and Master’s project, of which the central subject is Music Creation. In the subject, you work primarily with your own independent projects, but you will also participate in projects and themed courses where the Conservatory sets the framework.

    The third semester of the program is a compulsory external semester, which may consist of exchanges at another educational institution or internship with an external partner.

    The programme concludes with a self-defined Master’s project within the subject of Music Creation, which results in a recorded work (digitally uploaded), a public presentation of musical works and a written report, in which you present your reflections on the project.

    The programme is a full-time programme of study, and attendance at tuition is compulsory. The language of instruction is usually Danish, however some subjects are offered in English. Teaching given by guest teachers, or in connection with study tours, will however typically be provided in English.

    Hvad beskæftiger du dig med i dag?
    Jeg er sangskriver, producer og medejer af pladeselskabet Wild North Music. Jeg skriver og producerer for en række artister, med sange placeret på national og international radio og TV. Derudover underviser jeg i sammenspil på Gentofte Musikskole og har netop startet min egen undervisningsvirksomhed, hvor jeg underviser i moderne sangskrivning og musikproduktion.

    Hvordan ser en typisk arbejdsuge ud for dig?
    Jeg starter morgenen med at få et overblik over min kalender og starter på dagens to do’s samt svarer på mails. Det kan også være jeg har møder eller skal forberede undervisning. Derefter producerer jeg, redigerer vokaler eller forbereder mig til sessions, som jeg har om aftenen. Jeg underviser to dage om ugen.

    Hvad var dine vigtigste opdagelser under uddannelsen?
    Uddannelsen stiller rammerne, skaber muligheder og inspirerer, men det er op til den enkelte at få tingene til at ske. Det kræver selvdisciplin og ihærdighed. Ligesom uden for skolens fire vægge.

    Hvad er det bedste, du fik med fra uddannelsen?
    At jeg har holdt fast i mig selv og gået benhårdt efter at lære det håndværk som interesserer mig, selvom jeg nogle gange mødte modstand hos både undervisere og censorer.

    Hvad beskæftiger du dig med i dag?
    Jeg komponerer, producerer og optræder live som solist, med mit band Selvhenter og med performancegruppen Meshes. Ved siden af mine musik- og kunstprojekter, underviser jeg.

    Hvordan ser en typisk arbejdsuge ud for dig?
    Jeg arbejder typisk fra 10-17 enten i mit studie, mit øvelokale eller i mit arbejdsrum derhjemme – alt afhængig af om jeg skal komponere ny musik, producere eller optage lyd, udvikle ideer, tegne, skrive tekst, lave research eller forberede koncerter. Mandag er til kontor.  

    Hvorfor valgte du at studere Music Creation?
    Jeg ville gerne dyrke det at skabe, skrive og producere musik på egen hånd i en koncentreret periode.

    Hvad var dine vigtigste opdagelser under uddannelsen?
    Det at blive klogere på hvordan en konstruktiv og frugtbar kreativ proces kunne se ud for mig. Jagten på den frugtbare proces følte jeg blev imødekommet og gjort plads til – hvilket jeg er meget taknemmelig for.

    Hvad er det bedste, du fik med fra uddannelsen?
    For mig erfaringen med at producere meget på kort tid. At blive skubbet til at lave noget kontinuerligt og mærke hvad et sådan output kunne lære mig. Og ikke mindst at dele ens ting med andre, og at blive delagtiggjort i andres processer og fantasiverdener. Samtalerne herom.

    Hvad beskæftiger du dig med i dag?
    Jeg studerer videre på Det Kongelige Danske Musikkonservatorium, er komponist og spiller i og leder det kontemporære tangoensemble Erhværv.

    Hvordan ser en typisk arbejdsuge ud for dig?
    Mit arbejdsliv er meget forskelligt fra måned til måned, alt efter hvilke projekter jeg er involveret i, sideløbende med mine videre studier.

    Hvorfor valgte du at studere Music Creation?
    Fordi jeg ville fortsætte mine studier på RMC men gerne vil fokusere på det kompositoriske arbejde. Jeg spiller bandoneón og spiller meget tangomusik og kunne godt se, at som instrumentalist måtte jeg til udlandet for at opsøge færdigheder, så jeg valgte at opdyrke kompositionsarbejdet på min kandidatuddannelse.

    Hvad var dine vigtigste opdagelser under uddannelsen?
    Jeg lærte i høj grad at arbejde under frie rammer, skabe og definere kunstneriske projekter, og i hvert fald forsøge på at administrere en kompositorisk proces. Det er jo noget man kan bruge et helt liv på at lære. Samtidig lærte jeg en del om optagelser, mikrofoner og produktion, der er enormt nyttigt, når man gerne vil have noget at gøre med tilblivelsen af ens musik hele vejen fra første node på papiret til den færdige produktion og udgivelse.

    Hvad er det bedste, du fik med fra uddannelsen?
    Jeg har fået en del alsidighed ud af mine studier på RMC. Der var mulighed for at give sig i kast med at lære det meste, hvis man selv kom på, at man havde brug for det. Man kan selvfølgelig altid bruge mere tid på at lære alting, men der var mulighed for at skabe projekter som indeholdt alle dele af tilblivelsen af musik fra det kompositoriske, det administrative, til det tekniske.

    Hvad beskæftiger du dig med i dag?
    Jeg arbejder på sangene til mit første soloalbum. Udover det, har jeg netop færdiggjort andet album med bandet IRAH, som jeg har sammen med Adi Zukanovic. Lejlighedsvis tager jeg ud og synger for døende.

    Hvordan ser en typisk arbejdsuge ud for dig?
    Jeg arbejder på sange, laver sang-meditationer, finder inspiration på museer eller lignende, og tracker vokal eller kor for andre. Så opdaterer jeg musikprofiler og ordner opgaver fra vores pladeselskab.

    Hvorfor valgte du at studere Music Creation?
    Jeg havde lyst til at studere mere målrettet og fokuseret, og jeg synes uddannelsen bød på nogle spændende lærere, som jeg havde lyst til at diskutere mine ideer og processer med. Jeg oplever, at lærerne på RMC har en omfattende viden og kreativitet, som kan rumme mange slags kunstnere og vejlede på højt niveau.

    Hvad var dine vigtigste opdagelser under uddannelsen?
    Jeg fandt min stemme og ånd i musikken, på en meget dybere måde end før, gennem blandt andet sangmeditation. Jo mere jeg praktiserede forskellige holistiske arbejdsmetoder, jo mere åbnede hele min krop og stemme sig op og viste mig nye steder hen. Det åbnede op for en ny måde at skrive og komponere på.

    Hvad er det bedste, du fik med fra uddannelsen?
    Jeg er blevet endnu mere bevidst om, hvad for en kunstner jeg er, og hvilke intentioner der egentlig ligger til grund for, at jeg laver musik. Jeg er under uddannelsen blevet tvunget til at tage stilling til, hvad det er, jeg virkelig synes er interessant i livet, og hvordan jeg kan oversætte det til et musikalsk sprog.

    RMC prioritizes diversity in terms of genre and fields of expertise when the entire group of teachers is composed.

    As a student, you are offered a wide spectrum of professional impulses from permanent teaching staff as well as from contract and external teachers.

    Within the core subjects of the programme, the teaching performed by the permanent staff will normally not exceed more than two thirds of the total number of teaching hours.

    In relation to special courses, projects and similar activities, you will have the opportunity to meet a large number of external teachers.
