Squidback is a smartphone-based collective experience. Explore space and interactions with humans and machines while contemplating a generative soundscape without a preferred center or point of view.
It works through a smartphone app that generates sound by listening to itself and the space around.
You can’t control the process directly from the screen, but you can affect it by moving to different places in the room, close or far from other people and sound sources.
Choose at any moment how much you want to actively affect the process, from total contemplation by sitting back, relaxing and listening, to changing place once in a while, to constantly moving around, interacting with other people and devices.
Squidback unleashes your phone’s audio feedback capabilities. It is a very simple phenomenon that happens by activating a microphone and a speaker at the same time: the microphone will capture sound from the speaker, and the speaker will play sound from the microphone, creating an infinite amplification loop that generates tones, affected by sounds and bodies around.
It’s also known as Larsen effect, because it was first discovered by Danish scientist Søren Absalon Larsen in the beginning of 20th century.
Squidback App can be downloaded from Apple’s App Store and Google Play Store.
